Habit : Mostly monoecious trees or shrubs, sometimes functionally dioecious, often epiphytes and or with prominent adventitious / aerial root; sometimes root cilmbers.
Leaves : alternate, rarely opposite; entire or lobed, stipulate, the stipules enclosing the terminal bud, usually partly or completely connote or free, lateral, mostly caduceus and leaving a scar, rarely persistent when free.
Inflorescence : the characteristic fige ( hypanthdium ) borne axillary, singly or in pairs or caluliflorus borne on the trunk and main branches; each fig with an apical ostiole covered by small scales or the ostiole circular with all the scales pointing downwards and not visible frome outside.
Flowers : minute, numbers, borne on the inside of the fig, unisexual or sometimes reduced to neutral, often some or many of the female flowers developing as gall-flowers with stalked ovary and nurturing a developing insect within each. Male flowers ostiolar, in one or several rows or dispersed among the female within; perianth 2 - 6-lobed or 2 - 6-partite; stamens 1 - 6. Female flowers numerous, borne away from the ostiole; perinath variable in number and size or reduced or absent. Ovary often oblique, unilocular, single-ovuled; style eccentric to gynobasic. Fruit more or less a pulpy fig ( syconium ) containing a large number of minute i seeded drupelets or achenes.
