Herbs or shrubs with alternate or opposite, sessile, usually succulent, narrow-linear or scale-like leaves. Indumentum of simple, farinaceous or malpighian (medifixed) hairs. Inflorescence of solitary flowers to a few-flowered clusters in variously arranged spikes. Flowers small, mostly hermaphrodite, rarely unisexual, axillary, sessile, 2-bracteolate. Perianth-segments 5, ovate,oblong, or lanceolate, rather fleshy to thin-membranous, usually developing a transverse wing each on its back, sometimes the wings lacking. Stamens 4 or more usually 5, inserted below the ovary where no hypogynous disc present or along the edge or lower face of a hypogynous disc; anthers without an appendage or with a minute to relatively well-developed appendage, the anther-lobes separate from each other for various lengths. Ovary ovoid to subglobular; style long or short; the stigmas 2 or 3, shorter than style to several times the length of style. Fruit a small, dry utricle included in the perianth.
