Herbs or shrubs, rarely trees. Leaves alternate or opposite, usually exstipulate, simple or compound. Flowers small, aggregated into capitula/ heads on a common receptacle and surrounded by an involucre of involucral bracts; heads very small, to small to very big, sometimes aggregated into glomerules or compound heads, all variously arranged on the stem. Florets usually 5-merous all tubular and the heads discoid, or the outer ligulate and inner tubular and the heads then radiate, or all florets ligulate and the heads ligulate or the radiate head with peripheral enlarged tubular florets. Calyx absent or variously modified into a pappus above the inferior ovary; the pappus of scales or auriculate or coronate or of simple hairs or plumose hairs / bristles or a mixture of plumose hairs / bristles or a mixture of pales and bristles. Corolla tubular or ligulate and then 2-5-dentate. Stamens epipetalous, alternating with corolla-lobes, the anthers connate into a staminal tube, often variously appendiculate at tip, obtuse to tailed at base, introrse. Gynaecium bicarpellary; ovary inferior, 1-celled with a single ovule. Style usually with 2 branches often with pollen collecting hairs. Fruit an achene
The largest of the families of flowering plants with about 1530 genera and c. 23000 species distributed around the world except the Antarctica. Represented by at least 87 genera in the Kingdom excluding a large number of introduced ornamentals
Achillea L
Perennial, often pilose herbs, mostly with thick woody rootstock. Leaves alternate, undivided, to 3-4. pinnatipartite or pinnatisect. Capitula small to medium-sized, heterogamous, radiate or homogamous, discoid, long-peduncled, generally borne in a terminal corymb, occasionally solitary at the apices. Involucre oblong-cylindrical, ovoid or depressed subglobose to hemispherical. Receptacle ± flat or convex, paleaceous, paleae lanceolate or oblong, scarious, with midrib not approaching apex. Involucral bracts multi-seriate, not or narrowly to widely scarious-margined. Flowers white or yellow. Ray florets female, with 3-dentate limbs. Disc-florets bisexual, with ± compressed, regularly 5-toothed corolla tube. Achenes oblong to obovoid, compressed, glabrous, wingless, bald, apically enveloped by pouched bases of corolla tubes. It included about 200 species distributed in the northern hemisphere of both the Old and the New World, with its centre of diversity in the eastern Mediterranean and SW Asia. Represented by 2 species in Saudi
Arabic Name Up to 100 cm tall, erect, mosity unbranched herb with longitudinally striped or sulcate striate, terete, more or less densely patent hairy stem. Leaves laxly or + densely hairy, 2-3-pinnatisect, basal akin to cauline, 25-12 cm long, 0.5-2.5 (-3.5) cm wide, primary segments numerous, ultimate lobules setaceous to linear-lanceolate, 1 - 4 mm long, 0.2 - 4 mm long, loosely patent hairy peduncles, in 2-10 cm broad corymbs. Involucre oblong to broadly ovoid, 3 - 4 x 2-3 mm, basally attenuate. Phyllaries pale, externally hairy, ovate-triangular to oblong, outer acute, inner apically scarious and obtuse. Paleae membranous, lanceolate, subacute to obtuse and ± lacerate, glabrous to hairy at the tips. Ray-florets 4-5, with golden yellow, 1-2 mm long limbs. Disc-florets 10-30, corolla 2.5-3 mm long. Achenes about 1 mm long. Saudi Arabia: Asir. Distribution: Europe, SW Asia. 2. Achillea fragrantissima (Forssk.) Sch.-Bip., Fl. (Regensb.) 38: 13 (1855). Leaves small, thickish, oblong-ovate, 10 mm x 2.5 mm more than 15 mm x 2.5 mm, thick indumentum of short white hairs often appearing cemented together comb-like callose-serrulate. Capitula shortly peduncled, discoid, aggregated in short dense corymbs at the tips of corymbose branches. Involucre oblong-ovoid, c. 5 mm long, greyish hairy. Outer involucral bracts triangular-ovate to ± oblong, greyish hairy; inner oblong, glabrous, subobtuse. Ray florets missing.
