Annual to perennial herbs, sometimes shrubby. Leaves alternate, simple or occasionally pinnatifid. Capitula heterogamous, disciform, corymbose or paniculate, rarely solitary, pedunculate. Involucral bracts 2-4-seriate, imbricate, linear to lanceolate, inner ones longer than the outer, scarcely herbaceous. Receptacle naked, flat, alveolate. Ray florets pistillate, very numerous in several to many rows, slender, tubular or with very short, narrow and inconspicuous white or purplish, 1-3-fid ligules; style branches long exserted, thin and flat. Disc florets few, hermaphrodite, fertile, mostly yellow, 5-lobed. Anthers obtuse at base. Style branches short. Achenes small, obovoid, compressed 0-2-nerved, hairy, yellowish brown. Pappus of many hairs, sometimes with a short outer series.
