Habit: Biennial to perennial herbs to dwarf spiny shrubs, lactiferous. Stem variously branched.
Leaves: aves basal, or basal and cauline, entire to variously toothed or deeply lobed. Capitula homogamous, ligulate, few to many in corymbs or panicles.
Inflrescences : Involucral bracts several-seriate, imbricate, with scarious margins Receptacle naked. Ligules hermaphrodite, fertile, 5-toothed, yellow. Achenes beakless, rarely beaked, linear, terete or slightly compressed, striate. Pappus copious, several-seriate, simple hairy or dimorphic, (in some trimorphic), marginal achenes truncate or rostrate, pubescent, smooth or transversely wrinkled. cylindrical to rather pentagonous or 5-ribbed, rarely compressed or winged; inner achenes usually glabrous and smooth, 4-ribbed or 5-ribbed. Pappus several-seriate, homomorphic, all cottony soft or all setaceous rays or dimorphic with outer soft cottony hairs and a few to several setaceous inner rays deciduous or persistent.
