Perennial, tufted, aromatic, often tall grasses. Inflorescence of short paired, one sessile and the other pedicelled spikes (raceme), more or less enclosed in spathioles; these basic units of inflorescence crowded into simple or decompound often large false panicles. Spikelets 2-flowered, paired, one sessile and the other pedicellate, the sessile fertile, the pedicellate male or neuter, the lower 1 or 2 pairs on each spike homogamous (male or neuter), sometimes with swollen pedicel more or less fused to the internode; the lower floret in the sessile spikelet male or neuter, the upper bisexual. Glumes subequal, chartaceous, the lower often concave, 2-keeled, the upper boat-shaped; lemmas hyaline, the lower entire, the upper 2-fid or 2-lobed
