A tufted perennial grass up to 60 cm tall. Culms 2-5-noded, often branched, lower internodes woolly. Leaf-blade rolled, more or less curved or flexuous, filiform, up to 15 cm long, c. 1 mm wide. Panicle up to 15 cm long, narrow, rather dense. Spikelets pale yellow; glumes 3-nerved, glabrous or minutely scabrous and with sparse, long hairs near the margins, unequal the lower shorter, 9 (-14) mm long, the upper longer, 11-12 (-15) mm long; lemma 2.5-3 (-4) mm long, articulated at its top with the awn column, callus 1 (-1.7) mm, acute, bearded; awn-column 4-5 (-10-15) mm long, usually silvery white, lateral branches of the awn naked, fine, up to 25 mm long, central branch 25-60 mm long, naked in the lower 1/3rd, plumose in the upper 2/3rd, with a naked tip c. 1.5 mm long, acute
