Densely tufted perennial or annual grasses. Leaf-blade stiff, rolled-terete or flat- linear. Inflorescence of narrow panicles. Spikelets 1-flowered; glumes scarious; lemma cylindrical, produced into a 3-branched awn; awn with or without a column, articulated at the base of the column or near the middle of the lemma; awn-branches all or, usually, only the central plumose; callus prominent, sharp-tipped or minutely bifid; palea usually less than 1/2 the length of the lemma.
