Diagnostic description:
A tussocky perennial grass without rhizomes but with bulbous bases of the culms giving rise to new shoots. Culms up to 1 m tall. Leaf-blades linear to narrow-lanceolate, 3-30 cm long, 2-5 mm wide. Inflorescence of 4-12 or more spikes, digitate, subdigitate or racemose on an axis up to 10 cm long, the spikes 3-15 cm long. Spikelets 2-3 mm long; lower glume a minute ovate scale, 0.1-0.4 mm long; upper glume 3-nerved, 2/3 to almost as long as the spikelet, pubescent to villous; lower lemma 7-nerved, as long as the spikelet, usually sparsely to densely hairy with long white hairs.
