Coarse annual or perennial grasses. Leaf-blade narrow, flat; ligule very short, membranous. The unit of inflorescence is a spatheolate raceme which consists of a basal involucre of 4, persistent, homogamous (male), sessile-looking spikelets, subtending a raceme of 1-4 spikelet-pairs on a short rhachis; the spatheolate racemes borne singly or in pairs or aggregated into false, leafy panicles; involucral and pedicellate spikelets similar, dorsally compressed, 2-flowered; glumes subequal;
lemmas hyaline or one suppressed, empty, the upper staminate. Sessile spikelets terete, 2-flowered, the lower floret sterile, the upper bisexual or female, fertile; glumes subequal, coriaceous, the lower clasping the upper; lower lemma hyaline, empty, the upper lemma linear, stipitiform, hyaline below, coriaceous above, awnless or awned, the awn imperfect or well-developed, geniculate. Stamens 3.
