A perennial, shrubby grass with short woody rootstoc. Culms branched
throughout, woody, up to 1 m (or more) tall. Leaf-blade rigid, inrolled, 2-7.7 cm long
pungent, glaucous; sheaths more or less inflated, persistent (after the leaf-blades fall off) at the nodes. Panicle oblong to more or less cylindrical,5-12 cm long, around 10 mm wide; axis with shallow angular ribs below cupulate scars; spikelets enclosed singly by the involucre, the bristles glabrous or the inner obscurely ciliate, the longest bristles 7-20 mm long. Spikelets narrowly lanceolate, 6.5-8.5 mm long:; lower glume 1/2 to 3/4 the length of tne spikelet, acute to acuminate; upper glume almost as long as the spikelet, acute or acuminate: lower lemma as long as the spikelet, staminate, the upper similar to lower lemma.
